Is there a cure?

My plan was to have 5 chickens. 5 at the most. I now have 16 chickens and one turkey. On our way to our new house in the country, my husband said "I don't want our house to look like a farm." So that was 17 fowl and 2 goats ago. He spent the day building my run.

Gosh. I am already in trouble and I don't even have any chicks yet! I ordered 15 (minimum order, of course) from a hatchery to be shipped. Then someone heard I was interested in chickens and offered me the use of their incubator. Of course I have to try incubating and hatching my own chicks, so I'm having 12+ eggs shipped. The eggs should hatch within a few days of the chicks arriving, so between packing peanuts and extra eggs that the seller throws in, I have the potential to end up with 30 babies all at once! I would never wish for a peep to not survive the trip or for an egg to not hatch, but WOW 30 chicks seems like a lot for a girl who just wanted a couple of layers to start out with.

Hubby is in complete denial that we're going to be overrun with chicks in a few short weeks. He's just not even listening anymore.

I confess, I am the mother-in-law that Nighcap is talking about. I intended to share my chicks with him, but then the addiction set in. I think I will have a chick for him soon. I should have at least one roo in the bunch.

I'm addicted, too - I didn't even want chickens! We moved to the country about a year and a half ago. My husband wanted a few chickens. That was fine until I bought an incubator on eBay. I now have my "children," 25 of them! I won 40 Brahma eggs on eBay recently, figuring I would get a low hatch rate. Now its 30 chicks later. I'm calling friends trying to give away chicks! Reduced to 41 total, but now have more eggs coming - somebody stop me!

P.S. If anybody near Brooksville, Florida, wants some 3-week-old light Brahma chicks, let me know - I still have 14 left!

When I was doing my chick order, on a whim I changed it to include 4 golden comets. They are early layers according to the paperwork and very dependable. A friend gave me her 1 year old golden comet and she has laid an egg every single day since the friend gave her to me. I am thrilled to have them and almost wish I'd gotten more. Good call!
