Emptying and refilling will be labour intensive and will waste a lot of water, unless you use that water on your garden. So there will be costs of a sort with either option.

I mean technically, mine is one pump & one filter. Pump in the pond, filter above ground. I added the waterfall box but it's not required, I could have just had the water return directly back into the pond from the canister filter. That's been one of the biggest obstacles.....finding a reasonably priced filter that can handle waste from a duck pond. I feel like I have to be a scientist to understand how to keep the water clean and an engineer to understand how filters and pumps work. I've gotten to a point where I'm so aggravated trying to understand all this so i just feel like either point me in the direction of 1 filter/pump that will do the job or empty and refill.
Hello and Welcome to BYC!Hello all, I'm new to the forum, I thought I would share my setup. After several tries with smaller filters I setup this filter system and has been working very well for almost a year. Basically it is 2 55gal drums with about 2feet of k1filter media each for solids collector into water plant pond's into grow beds and return. Its about a 1500 gal pond using a 100w pump up to the filter and gravity does the rest.
