Is there such a thing as a docile Roo?

My Wellie boy Tohr is super sweet. Really good to his girls and doesn't try to challenge me at all. In fact I still haven't heard him crow but I know he's mounting his girls.

My black australorp roo has drawn blood on me twice. Doesn't like my hand. He's also very wary when I pick up one of his girls. He doesn't attack or anything, and is VERY good at his rooster duties (letting the girls eat first, protection, calling out, etc.).

I cuddled him and his harem when they were day-olds but I guess he really, just doesn't like my hand! Unless I have cheese. Or bread. Or tortillas.

My big French Blue copper Marans from Whitmore Farms is awesome. Friendly to me, eats treats from my hands, warns hens of danger, and will have the hens eat food first before he has any. He also is tolerant of our other 2 young roosters. great guy, really love the breed!

The feed store accidentally gave me a EE cockerel and an EE pullet when I ordered two EE pullets back in Spring of 2009. They were part of a larger order of pullets.

I AM SO GLAD THAT THEY MADE THAT ERROR!

That EE cockerel, who we ended up naming DaddyRoo, ended up being the best thing that ever happened to my little flock.

Yes, he was the most perfect gentleman. He was protective of his hens, and respectful of me. He would eat sunflower seeds from my seven year old daughter's hand.

When one of my BO pullets decided to go broody, we gave her a few eggs he had fertilized, and now we have four children that he fathered -- one of which is also a roo.

Sadly we lost him less than two weeks ago, but just today we completed the merger of his son and his group of hens with his daddy's hens.

Sonny boy is just as good a rooster as his father, and with 15 hens (his plus the ones that used to belong to his dad), junior roo is in hog heaven tonight!

I have a really sweet cuckoo marans roo. He has not tried to challenge me in the least. He does follow me closely though, when I'm trying to catch one of the ladies. He's quite the gentlemen. He lets the ladies eat first and watches over them. I think I might sell a son of his. It's a 11 week old cuckoo marans with the same disposition. Originally, I had planned on eating him, but, after seeing his personality, I think I might try and sell him.

I had a Blue Cochin that was the sweetest little rooster. When I came home from work he would run over to me and wait for me to pick him up. He loved to sit on my arm.

There is such thing, but you can't just order or ask for one, they're fairly rare. Speckledhen's roosters are all amazingly sweet... just ask Cetawin! Some are, some aren't, it's really just the luck of the game.

I plan on free ranging this flock more than I did my last and that is one reason I was wanting to put a roo in the mix. But.. the one worry I have is my 5 year old twins & my almost 3 year old love to go and 'play' with the chickens. Love catching them and I wouldn't want a rooster to 'protect' his flock against them. So, I may just wait until they grow up a little bit to add one in.

We'll see I guess.
Thanks again! A lot of food for thought here!

Isaac, my Delaware, is my buddy--Nick was here the other night and saw me rubbing Ike's chest . Suede, my huge blue Orpington, is a teddy bear. Zane, my crippled Barred Rock, is extremely affectionate. Zane's sire, Hawkeye, the first rooster I ever owned, was an exemplary rooster, may he rest in peace.

I've had aggressive roosters and they didn't get to stay. My roosters are only aggressive when it comes to protecting their girls from legitimate danger. The bar has been set very high here for any future roosters.

ETA: No matter how sweet the rooster, I'd never trust a small child alone with one. They make jerky movements and make roosters nervous.
