Is this a badly healed broken foot? Is she in pain? Help!

Is she okay or should she be euthanized?

  • I think she's okay

  • Probably put her down

Okay! Updates! I think that spot does look like bumblefoot after all! Though it seems very small, perhaps healing? They have cleaned out the coop since I started volunteering here and it is much cleaner than it used to be, so maybe it's getting better on its own? She actually did seem like she was moving around better today, didn't take her nearly as long to get back in the coop. I've been feeding her extra protein and handfeeding her lots of veggies/scratch so the other chickens can't steal it from her.

Anyway, here are the pictures. Should I add them to the original post? They aren't super great, but the only help I had were a pair of teenagers who were walking by that I asked to take photos for me while I held her.

I'm also going to post a video link in the OP so you can get an idea of how she's walking on it. I wonder if she'll always have a limp even if we are able to fix it.

So epsom salt? Surgery? What's the best fix for this old girl, d'ya think?
Number one thing is to trim the nails. And may I recommend you not feed treats or if you really have to then to limit them to a small amount and only once a week. Not daily. I can not stress how important a complete balanced diet is.

Have you seen success treating bumblefoot with those things? I'm in Colorado, everyone is all about natural medicine here, haha, so I'm sure they wouldn't be opposed to trying that as long as it fixes her.

Also, I posted the video in the OP if that is helpful for anyone to see.

I cured my pekin drake of bumble foot with this exact method, I did not have to do surgery.

I'll watch the video now :)

I have treated bumblefoot successful ly by soaking the foot, taking the scab off and squeezing the pus out. No meds or oils or wrapping involved. Don't make things more difficult and stressful for the bird. Try to keep it simply.

Veggies are considered treats? I only gave her a handful of worms once. I truly don't think she gets enough because she has to sit to eat and the other chickens rob whatever she's pecking at away from her. And if too many chickens get close to where she is, she hobbles away and they eat up whatever she was working on. I'm only there every few days so she's not being overfed, I don't want her too heavy and adding weight to her hurting foot after all!

Anything besides a complete poultry feed is a treat.

The spot showing a bumble is so tiny it’s almost inconsequential. A “bumblefoot” in my opinion is not her issue.

I’m really surprised because the topside photos hinted that there was a lot of swelling underneath. Perhaps she does have an old orthopedic injury in her past which went unnoticed and she’s learned to adapt.

Some chickens lose toes, whole feet even, to frostbite, but survive.

Trimming her nails (careful of the blood vessel in them. They’ll bleed like a dogs nails do if cut to the quik) and soaking her feet would be the only thing I’d do right now. I wouldn’t pick at or dig out that dark spot. I’d just watch it for changes for now.

The noises she’s making are not of complaint. That is a contented sort of trill.

I'm so relieved to know that the sound she's making is a happy sound and not a pain sound! Do you think that thing poking out might be a thorn or a splinter then? I'll try to get a better look at it next week. If so, should I soak her feet then try to pull it out or just leave it alone? I'll take more pictures as able. And I'll definitely see what I can do about trimming her nails.

I don't know if you guys can tell from the video, but she usually walks on her ankle joint on that foot. Like, with the toes all facing toward her backend. Or on the side of the foot. I hope soaking her foot will fix whatever is going wrong with her.

I am sorry but I do not think soaking her foot is going to fix it.
I'm just now seeing your video and it looks like she may have damaged it.
How long has she been like this?
