I recently noticed a change in My 4 year old cuckoo Marans right eye. It was never really swollen, no sign of injury, etc. I just noticed the shape was slightly different one day. I went ahead and treated with saline and terrimycn but didn’t notice a difference. She’s had a history of health issues in the past. She suffers from ascites and I drain her as needed. She’s acting completely normal.

It’s now 3 weeks later and I’m pretty certain she’s blind in that eye. The pupil doesn’t contract and is enlarged. The color of both the pupil and iris is cloudy.

I’ve been researching causes…. I’ve landed on cataracts. Is it possible that cataracts can change the color of the iris, too? What are your thoughts?

(I’d also like to mention that one on of my hens has an eye issue. However, her eye is swollen (photo attached of her as well). I’ve been treating with saline and terrymicin and seems to be getting better. I flushed it and noticed some debris in there so I feel fairly confident it was due to debris and I’m not dealing with a disease. She doesn’t have any nasal discharge or other symptoms. I actually had testing for MG and other things back in August. All panels came back negative.)

We have 4 beehives on our property. They’re roughly 100 yards from the coop but once in awhile I see a bee or two in the run. I suppose it’s possible my cinnamon queen was stung.

Anyway…. All that to ask… do you think my Maran has a cataract?

Update on this thread: I went to the vet and she feels that based on her ongoing battle with ascites, it's likely cancer spreading to other areas-including her eye and not occular mareks.

I'll probably send her in for a necropsy once she passes for my own confirmation, but hopefully she has a few more healthy years with us.
