Is this a common condition?

So my daughter works for TSC. She found this baby chick in a shipment. She has searched for any signs she has eyes and can't find any. Is this a common condition for chicks to be born with no eyes and what's her chance at a life with a flock?View attachment 1740865 View attachment 1740868 View attachment 1740869
Welcome to the world of house chickens!
Helen Keller with feathers!
If that's all that is wrong and there are no other hidden issues - like internal or neurological deformities - she just may make it, especially if you have her inside where you can keep an eye on her. If she does, consider using her as (don't laugh, I'm serious!) a therapy pet. My birds go on school visits, and the kids love them. They can't believe that Herman and Feisty walk on a leash, just like a dog. And the kids get a kick ou a a chicken in diapers, too. I'm willing to bet that a blind bird would resonate with anyone working with a disability - both children and adults!

Thank you. She does have the cross beak defect. My daughter is so worried she won't make it through the night. I actually work in a nursing home where I can take her.

They're tough little creatures! I'm sure your daughter knows this already, but if not, make sure the little one is getting electrolytes, even if it's only Pedialyte. That can make a world of difference. Good Luck!

@artsyrobin You've dealt with crossbeaks in tiny chicks (like Yittel.) Do you have any pointers to share for this little treasure?

Poor baby! I'm glad she was found by people who care enough to try. You and your daughter are good people and I hope she thrives.
The cross beak doesn't look too bad atm but it could worsen with age. I would just keep an eye on her to make sure she is able to eat and is getting plenty of water. Maybe you could make a mash out of her food just to be sure she's keeping hydrated.
Good luck with her!

Great idea, was thinking the same thing. Thanks.
