Cyn, I notice your NHRs seem more uniform in color than the two I posted, if that means anything.

BTW, I assume that is a Barred PR behind your NHR in the first pic, and not a Dominique?

John, I think that uniform color is just the hatchery bird quality. I like yours much better! Mine should have more color in the hackles and maybe it will develop later on. Yes, that's a Barred Rock in the background, my mainstay breed. I love them! I have three BR cockerels as leaders for my laying flock of 44 hens and pullets of various breeds (10 BR girls), though one is my injured Zane and may not ever be with the flock again. They are full brothers, all from my late rooster, Hawkeye, with my fav BR hen, Lexie. Do you have any BRs?

Yes that thought crossed my mind. Good to hear confirmed by someone with experience, as I can see from above that you are!

No BRs (yet), as I am just starting out--small. Though I can't imagine NOT getting some in future. May I ask why you like them so much? That would help.

My Barred Rock girls are the most curious, affectionate ones I own, other than my true Ameraucanas. They seem interested in things and have longer attention spans than the other breeds. For instance, about a week ago, when a turtle was lumbering across the yard, six of my eight freeranging BR girls followed it all over, accompanied by my Blue Ameraucana, Charlotte. A couple of other girls were mildly curious for about three seconds, then left to do other things while the turtle walked into the woods, followed by six BRs. My roosters have been exceptionally tempered and even affectionate; only one exception in my years of raising BRs. The hens are excellent layers and after the pullet-egg stage, the eggs are all large to even jumbo at times, but mostly extra large, nice brown, sometimes with speckles. My main flock rooster will always be a Barred Rock. They do not go broody at the drop of a hat, so if you really want broodies, they are not it, with a few exceptions. The further away from the hatchery generations you get, I would suspect the broodiness would be more common.

Thanks again! I think I'm gonna try to get at least some BRs this coming Spring.
