Is This a Pip?

Pics
Glad to hear the little one is straightening up and eating and drinking. Maybe someone nearby has a new hatchling or two they can give/sell you so this one has a buddy or two.

Sounds like it shrink wrapped. I'm sorry for your loss. You may as well open it all the way at this point so you can maybe see where it went wrong.

Wish I could, but corona is limiting my options. I'm spending a couple hours a day next to him though. Sometimes I stick my hand in there to cover his eyes when he's sleeping (the light makes him wake up lol) so hopefully my presence makes him a little less lonely. The next two weeks are my finals so I'll probably be reading my prep books next to him for a while.

I'll try that. Should I leave the other egg without the pip alone? I'm just a little nervous about how long its been, but I'd rather not intervene if that makes his chances worse.

If there's no pip, leave it alone.

Nothing new today. Egg is still shaking a bit but I don't see a pip yet. Fred (the chick) is doing well, and he's a bit more chatty now. He's still getting the hang of eating and drinking by himself, I often have to mimic it before he really goes after it. I set him on the ground yesterday and he follows me, so I guess he's imprinted on me.

Egg still doesn't have a pip, I don't think he made it. Fred is doing really well and he is starting to spread his wings a bit when he jumps down from my hand.

Since he was the only egg to hatch, I was wondering whether it would be better to buy another quail chick so he'd have some company. There's someone half an hour away selling coturnix chicks about his size. Would it be a good idea to get 1 or 2? I feel bad when I have to focus on something else and he chirps louder to get my attention.

You should get it some company. I would get at least 2.

I don't know how well they'll do together when they're adults, being different species. I've never done it and can't speak from experience, though. As chicks they might be ok, but they will probably mature at different rates.

I plan on selling them once they're adults. I don't really want adult quail longterm, so I'm hoping to move them somewhere else before I need to upgrade the brooder to a full enclosure. I can get them if I find a certain way to sell or rehome them once they're adults.
