Hi duck people, I frantically posted in the emergency thread this morning in the Hope's that the photo would be explanation enough,because at the time I didnt have words. I have since calmed down a think I can string a sentence together,so here goes. I have six cayuga that are roughly 6 months old, the belief has been all female however this mornings event have left me confused at best. About two weeks ago one started laying so I've been keeping a close eye on them to see who will be next, yesterday I noticed one hiding and acting strange,this morning I found the same duck hiding in a freshly dug hole under a bush and thought she was nesting . Then she came running out with this hanging out! There was clear goo being expelled simultaneously and possibly some fecal matter. I dont mean to sound dense but what am I looking at? Is she a he or is this something much more awful? What should I be doing? Any insight would be greatly appreciated, I feel entirely inept .

That looks like an egg membrane. Can you catch her and gently remove it?

It's gone now. I gave her a warm bath this afternoon but it had already disappeared by that point. Would that be a soft shelled egg?

If it's gone, it almost certainly was a soft shelled egg. Do you offer free choice oyster shell?

Thanks, I do have free choice oyster shell out for them. I didnt want to transition to layer feed since only one was laying. Should I make that transition?

I was going to ask about first time layer... but I answered my own question. She might be like my beedee was and not know the oyster shell is there for if she doesnt have an older to show her. Speedy caught on quick and I never had soft shells from her and sugar did too... only time I had a soft shell was from Donella and that was my fault for not having oyster shell out soon enough.
Beedee's first two eggs were one was so soft it felt like soft skin and the other was just the egg and no shell. I found both of them in the bottom of the 45g stock tank I have, when I cleaned it out. Sugar started laying the the next day and I guess showed beedee what the oyster shell was for cause she started gobbling it down and haven't had a soft shell since.
