Is this a Rooster or Hen, also the breed....

Thinking about it. 2 chicks hatched the same day. One with short wing feathers and one with long wing feathers. It makes sense the one with the short wing feathers is the pullet and the one with the long wing feathers is the cockerel. So I agree with my wife.
Those particular chicks may have those genders, but you cannot tell that by the feather length.

No matter how much sense it seems to make, those feather lengths do not accurately predict those genders in chickens. EVER.

Most of the time, feather length does not tell gender.
When it does tell gender, it is backwards of what your chicks have.

There is a gene that controls how fast chickens grow their feathers. Either gender can have either form. But just the right cross of parents can produce feather sexable chicks: sons who grow feathers slowly, and daughters who grow feathers fast.

It works because slow feathering is dominant, roosters have sex chromosomes ZZ, and hens have sex chromosomes ZW. (I can explain in more detail if you want to know, but it does not apply to your current chicks.)

These two gray chicks are about a week old. Its amazing they survived since they hatched with two broody hens in attendance, and both hens have been vying for the honor of raising these chicks. Can anyone tell if these two chicks' are going to be roosters or hens at this young age? Also, they look like Easter Eggers to me, but what do you think? Choices are Rhode island Reds, Black Marans, Black austrolourps, Easter Egger, and Delaware. I have never seen gray chicks before--are they common?
They are common. It is the blue gene, i would have to say its possibly a black maran, or australorp. My babies that look like that are sapphire gens, and Sapphire splashes. But, we also have some blue breasted leghorns, they are a little darker than our sapphires.

Hello! 😊 So, you listed possible breeds. Did you buy hatching eggs, or get them from your own flock?

I want to know if you know what the possible roosters are, and what the possible hens are.

Can you share photos of the parents if possible?

Hi there!

They were hatched from my own flock. I will post photos of the possible fathers tomorrow (since I have only 3 mature roosters). I have a variety of hens (about 25 in total), some store-bought "purebreeds" and some home-raised hybrids. I would enjoy taking their photos too, and will do so. Thanks for your interest!

Here is a photo of the gray chicks, taken today. The tall one with the long tail is the cockerel and the one in the foreground is the pullet. The cockerel's tailfeathers are black and have a teal sheen in the sunlight. The pullet seems to have a peacomb but the cockerel's comb is getting bigger, and he has wattles. Both have black, featherless feet and legs.
