Or maybe they will K I C K it for you! We are talking FEDS here, not only your stupid locals. I agree it is a poor dumb rule that they may choose to ignore. It passed because of places like the state of FL which is pretty much a Eco-nightmare. they think they can control flying muscovies when they can't control chickens on Key West! "Approximately 26% of all fish, reptiles, birds, and mammals in South Florida are exotic" The big 3 animals are hogs, cats, and rats. Reptiles include such nice things as Burmese Pythons, Green Iguanas, and Nile Monitors. Other birds include monk parrot. myna birds, & Purple swamp hens.
FL (with other states and urban areas) begged for help with their Muscovies, birds excaping, and being dumped in parks etc. The Federal rule which goes into effect March 31, 2010 was the result. The biggest problem is that the animal rights groups have grapped on to this rule and are going to insist that it be enforced. It is going to be hard for law enforcement to ignore this stupid rule with the animal rights groups insisting it be enforced. Birds born before 3/31/10 will be grandfathered in so be prepared to prove you had your birds before then. Otherwise keep a low profile, law enforcement is unlikely to go looking for trouble unless animal rights force them to act.

Yes, I live here in South Florida, and they have been battling this issue for years. I mean, come on, give me a brake!

These birds have been here since before the Indians for crying out loud! I myself, just love seeing those sweet Muscovies. I know, I know, they are competing with the native species, our Wood Ducks and such. What are you supposed to do, I mean really? I don't believe in killing them, just the thought makes me sick. Like I said, they were here before us, leave them alone. Just my opinion.

i agree.. and why does the whole country have to suffer cuz of florida???????????????

EXACTLY what I was thinking about this - not even all of Florida, just a few sections. God forbid they should do something like have UF (or any other suitable college/group - just thought of them because they have a HUGE Vet/Ag dept) go collect them and add them to the Animal auctions that they have several times a year. Solve the problem and add some cash to the university general funds. Oh sorry that would make sense!!

I think it is just ANOTHER manifestation Of:

" .......well-meaning, intolerant, know-it-all, Do Gooders making more things illegal all the time. "

P.S. Just wait until the Gub-Mint forces you to buy into the "new" Health Insurance plan. Looks like a good idea...until you have to PAY for it.

I'm going to tell you what I've learned so far about this whole ban on Muscovies thing. First, the Muscovy duck is not a native of Florida, never was. There are only two or three counties in S. TX that they are considered a native bird. Mexico is their native country and the small area in TX they inhabit was due to migration. Florida is not the only state having a problem of either turned out Muscovies or escaped Muscovies. Here in N. TN I rarely see wild ducks but I do see Muscovies on the Buffalo River and wild ducks who obviously had a Muscovy parent.

The Muscovy duck reproduces at a much higher rate then migratory birds. If not for that then the permit only law probably would never have been considered. As it is Muscovies have exploded in migratory bird water ways destroying the habitat.

Don't blame the government for this, blame the people who owned the birds and were not responsible enough to keep the birds from becoming a nuisance. In other words those that are responsible keepers of their flocks are now paying for the irresponsibility of others.

The last thing I found out is that Wild Life Management was unaware that there are show breeders of the Muscovy and the hardship this ban is going to cause. They are looking at working it so that is not invasive on those that do raise them to show.

The reason the law is going into place is NOT because of Fl. It's because the ducks did not have a NATURAL breeding population in the US until a little while ago which occurred in southern TEXAS. Muscovies are not native to any other state. Because they are now native to Texas, they are covered by the migrating bird act.

So it's NOT Fl.

Also, Key West chickens are not an "issue" in Key West, it is only people who move there that complain about it. Those bids have existed there naturally for 200 years and are PROTECTED BY LAW against harm.

its true! but i don't think the government is going to go to every single person's house seeing if they have muscovies or not. i'm planning on getting some and i'll clip their wings and they will live in duckie world till they die!!!!!

Thank you all for sending responses to this topic and I agree with Taylor in saying "I don't think the government is going to go to every single person's house seeing if they have Muscovies or not." But I think they should to do this for people that live in Florida, the state that has problems with feral Muscovies or other states that have issues, no offense to anyone that lives in the Florida State that owns Muscovy Ducks. This is totally a different topic but, I wonder when domestic Muscovy Ducks started to become a common sight in Florida and when they started to become pests? Furthermore, lets continue raising Muscovy Ducks for our benefit and hope all turns out well.

It is going to be a Sad Sad Day....I got the info. from Waterfowl rescue.com and I was heartbroken. I don't have any,but I wanted some. All I can say is Pray and Pull together for a fast and responsible way out of this.

There is a whole thread here about it.

Check it out if you want actual info instead of people complaining about FL who really has nothing to do with this.

Honestly, FL leaves Muscovy issues to the local police, it's not something they complain to the Federal Government. If muscovies are an issue in areas of Fl, it's the police who are supposed to handle it because they are domestic animals.

Again, FL has nothing to do with this issue.
