Is This A Stray?

Can't. I have to do it by myself sadly. He is getting close to allowing me to pick him up though.
Well I say keep doing what your doing and I hope you catch him soon oh and try giving him some goats milk if you can get your hands on it never cows milk it can give them worms and if they have worms it will make them worse i used to work at my local APL in cat isolation and I would bribe the new comers with tuna and goats milk mixed together worked every time

It this weird thing that I recycled into a big nesting box. The chickens love it.
If I cover the hole with something is this a beter alternative to the basket?

I just don't see how you'll be able to cover the hole securely so he won't get out. He won't understand that you are helping him and will do ANYTHING to escape. What about the other side? Does it have a secure lid?

After he gets out he won't trust you and I'd be shocked if he let you catch him again.

Then, unfortunately, I think the "basket" is going to be your best option. Just make sure you put air holes in there.

If at all possible, catch him in the morning. He might soil himself overnight. And even if he doesn't he is going to be VERY stressed. Still, no matter how stressed he is for a short period it is better than dying. Make sure you put a towel in. A towel, not a blanket. Definitely not fleece or anything fuzzy. You need something absorbent in case he pees or poops.
