In the fall we had some old hay bales for decoration that we ended up leaving outdoors all winter. Is it ok to put that in the run as something to peck at or jump on? Or is it bad or moldy from being outdoors in wet weather all winter

I'm no expert, but in the open air, I think it's fine and I'd read that they can have fun picking a bale apart. I stuck a bale in there that I hadn't brought around and might have got a bit damp being on the concrete. They haven't touched it, but might get interested when it gets bugs or worms in it.

If it was mouldy, I'd probably not put it in with them, but I'm in a dry climate so we don't get mould everywhere. I'd be more cautious in the tropics.

From what I seen chickens peck through when allowed to free range a bit of mold on hay should pose no problem the hay will attract worms and other insects that will provide extra protein in my estimation and give them something to scratch through once they break apart..
