i would soak it a couple times first, it may give you a better idea of where the infection actually is, rather than just choosing a random spotI am planning on just nicking the toe to start with to see if I get puss. If it is puss and not just fluid, would you suggest opening up the cut more or just trying to squeeze everything out a tiny hole? Her skin is stretched from the swelling and I worry if I try and squeeze everything out it might tear.
i would do an epsom salt soak,
it looks like the nail is infected, soaking in epsom salts will help to draw out infection and may make the infection site more visible
Thank you. Those are much better now. I am going to go ahead and try and work on it this evening. I will monitor it and hopefully it will heal up and I won't have any more questions. Thanks for everyone's advice.
did you take any pictures? could have been some sort of gangrene from her toenail infectionI went ahead and cut into it. It wasn't a white/yellow puss. It was more a brown/black chunky substance. That might be puss. I don't know. My knowledge of puss is limited.
I made a cut, squeezed out the mess, rubbed it with corn starch, rinsed the inside with a syringe full of Epsom salt solution, put a large glob of neosporin, and covered with gauze and vet wrap.
No limping afterwards. I did have to tie a loose knot in the vet wrap because she was picking at it.
Any ideas about what was inside it? I don't know if puss looks like that sometimes.
