is this bumblefoot ..i need a little help ..

i know I should have washed her foot before taking these pics ..



I just noticed this today..i did see blood on the perch about a week or 2 ago ..I looked at them then but I guess I didn't look close enough..shes not limping as far as I can tell..
I did see were one there was a case of the diarrhea in the nite ..it was one of the white sex links but I am not sure it was her ..altho now I am thinking it was ..I generaly just give the some probyotics for any simtoms of the diarrhea...

also should I quarantine her ...she does seem to be acting sick ..altho I am missing an egg the last 2 days ..mine lay every day like clockwork ..only when theres something wrong do they miss a day ..

any help would be great ..

Those feet need a thorough scrubbing with a soft brush to see exactly what you are dealing with. I would start with a long soak in some Epsom salt water, and then get to scrubbing. I suspect what you are seeing is scaly leg mite damage. You are going to need to get both feet as clean as possible to treat them anyway. Once they are soaked and cleaned, take some more pics. After the pics are done, apply a liberal coating of Vaseline to both feet and legs.

thanks for replying ..I will be soaking her feet ..I also ment to say she wasn't acting sick in any way ..I did clean her foot after I took the first set of pics and I put some doulble antibiotic ointment on it ..I will reapply after a soaking then or would the vasilean be better....and i'll get some better pics ..thank you

I hope these are a better view ..I am thinking bumble foot now that I see the spot on the bottom in the one pic..i washed them with an old toothbrush and covered her feet and legs with vasilean..I am gunna put some antibiotic ointment on it tonite when she hits the perch..

I wait to hear whast everyone else thinks it might be before going any farther

my wifes an rn and helped me put the vasilean on her ..if its gunna have to come off ,shes gunna have to man the scalpel while I hold her ..I've been reading that some have used antibiotics in the water to get rid of it ..I will try the least invasive method first ..I thought I'd soak her foot each day and apply new antibiotic cream after each soaking ..

That's not bumblefoot. I don't know exactly what it is, but it isn't bumblefoot. If it isn't bothering her, then leave it be.

I still think, from the raised scales on the legs/feet, that you may have a scaly leg mite issue. I would start doing vaseline rubs each day for the next week or two.

thank you so much..I was told by others that say it looks like she just lost a nail ..i will keep applying the vasilean ..i looked up scly leg mites and think you are right ..thanks so much for catching that ..i might have over looked that with my worrying about the toes ..once i washed her up a bit, i could see exactly what you were thinking ..i plan on putting the whole flock on a leg treatment ..the other birds legs don't look as bad as hers ..the scales are much tighter , but i figure i need to do a huge cleaning and treat the coop as well as the flock ..

is vasilean better then oil ..i have read that others use oil ..and they just dip each birds legs up to the feathers ..i only have 4 birds now but my new babys are coming in 2 days ..they will be in the brooder in the house till they are big enough to go to their coop next to my current flocks coop..

i kind of feel like i let my flock down by letting them catch mites ..its been terribly cold here this yr ..seems like we had more sub zero temps this yr then i can ever remember..i have been covering their combs all winter with vasilean ..i guess i should have been keeping a better eye on their legs..i always watch their eyes and nose for any changes but never seen anything to cause me to worry ..

I think that could have been frostbite that took off the tip of the toe and there is a little swollen tissue left. But I agree with having scaly leg mites. I no she didnt care to much for the scrubbing but as soon as I put the antibiotic cream on , I could feel her relax a little bit ..I am kind of lost on this ..but I have started the vasilean on all their legs at night..i see others wrap their legs with cling bandages ..and some dip their legs in oil ..I am sticking with the vasilean for now ..I guess I should put her toe in some antibiotic ointment each nite as well..

also I should scrub all their legs each nite as well as apply the vasilean..?and keep doing this each nite for a couple weeks till I see the scales come off ..?

I've been instructed to dip their feet in oil, then put vase line on. Eventually the vaseline will soften the crust and you'll be able to get it off. You will need to continue theboil/vaseline even after that. Once the crust is gone, you are finally getting down to the actual mites.
