Is this coop big enough?

Hey!
So we are getting some chicks in a few weeks, and I’m trying to determine a good coop set up. I made a separate post for a possible shed idea. But I found a local coop builder snd was curious what y’all thought about this.

they describe it as 4x8 coop, and say it fits 6-8 birds. That’s the full area including coop and run. The house itself is 2.25 feet x 4 feet. Again I’m new, but that does not seem big enough if I’m reading other posts correctly. That would only be 9 square feet of house, and 32 square feet of run.
I’ve read several articles and posts and if you go by the recommended 3-4 square feet per bird in the house and 10 ft in the run, then that coop would be good for 3 chickens??? Not the 6-8 they advertise.

or am I completely wrong this Coop would actually work.

Premade coops go on factory requirements,which in the us are between 15-24 inches per bird. I would say 3 max for standards and 4 max for bantams

That's a well designed coop but 6-8 is too many. You can at the most 5 in there, or maybe 7-8 bantams.
The common rule of thumb is 4 sq feet per bird in the coop area and 10 sq feet per bird in the run. many people have more or less, but more is better to a degree.

It might be okay if you plan on free ranging and just use that for housing them at night up until you let them out in the morning.

I've pre-ordered 8. So I know I'll atleast have that many.
I was really hoping this coop would work when I first saw it, until I began diving further into how much space is actually needed.

Your suspicions are correct. A chicken can be thought of as a 15" cube (physical size plus a little personal space), and they neither pack like sardines nor stack for storage.

Those "recommendations" given for pre-fab coops are based on the maximum number of chickens in an intensive-management, "factory-farm" situation.

In a backyard environment, for each standard-sized chicken you want:

4 square feet in the coop
10 square feet in the run
1 linear foot of roost
1 square foot of permanent, 24/7/365 ventilation.

Additionally, the roost should be above the nestboxes and the ventilation should be above the birds' heads when they're sitting on the roost.

I personally would not build anything smaller than a 4'x4'x4 cube for the coop itself.

OP, if this place custom makes coops, maybe you can give him specs on what you want and see what that costs.

x2. If they can make the whole thing a coop, that would be appropriate for 8 birds.
