Is this cuckoo maran a chick or a dude?

If you mean the black and white one in this pic:

LL

Then yes, that's a BR roo. I own a Cuckoo Maran roo and he is nowhere similar in color, yours has no feathering of the legs as far as I can see.
That is DEFINITELY not a Barred Rock male. He has type that is wayyy off.. His colouring is either cuckoo or is a mix. He has pink legs - barred rock have yellow.

American CM often don't have the feathered legs. It is the French Marans that do.

Here is a Barred Plymouth Rock Cock.

Barred Rock, huh? That was one of my thoughts. Any specifics why?

Also thinking Ameracauna, Delaware, Buff Orpington, Easter/Olive Egger.

thanks!
Delaware would be very similar to Barred Plymouth Rocks. Ameraucanas are not great layers in the winter, neither are EE/OEs. Buff Orps... well they are never good layers in my experience.

Barred Plymouth Rocks are the image our grandparents have in their heads when they think of their childhood. They are THE chicken. Regal, FRIENDLY, beautiful, fantastic layers, great temperaments, awesome foragers, very hardy and their barred feathers don't attract areal predators like other breeds.

I started my farm after receiving my first Barred Rock I named Dixie. She has since passed on, and my love/obsession for chickens continues.

I do think Ameraucanas, Delawares, BOs, and OEs are all awesome breeds.. but Barred Rocks - they are the best.

If you aren't sold on the Barred variety, there is always the Silver Pencilled Plymouth Rock :)
