Wonders this too....but that looks like some funky membrane in there too, not sure I'd eat it.

yes that is correct.

The stripes were all connected and kinda wrapped around the yoke.

If the stripes are like an umbilical cord, it's probably a crazy form of the chalaza. Looks like her egg making mechanism went haywire. I personally wouldn't eat it--only because it looks nasty, not because I have any scientific basis to say it's bad, mind you.
