Is this food too big for these babies?

I tried this. Way too time consuming. I'm getting them a special blender tomorrow.

Could this be used and would it work for oyster shell and grit as well?

I would not use it for grit.....grit is actually tiny pieces of granite.....so um rocks....

Oyster shell should already be in edible sizes.

In my experience, oyster shell isn't always in the right size for quail. If they get pieces that are too large, they may well be able to eat them, but they might cause crop issues. I have a stainless steel mortar and pestle that I use for oyster shell. I use eggshell when I have it, though. The birds like it more and it's much easier to crush.

Maybe it is the brand of OS I get is just small already.

I like the mortar and pestle idea for the OS.

I dumped a huge bowl of shells after making eggs this morning, do you dry them, or just mush them up still gooey? I’ve never tried giving them shells.

I save my egg shells and bake them for about 10 mins, which makes them easy to crush with a mortar and pestle.

I made the mistake of buying a bag of oyster shell for chickens, and the pieces are HUGE, about the size of my button quails' heads! I haven't been able to grind it up either, the pestle and mortar don't break it at all. Maybe I can find some finer stuff meant for budgies.
