My day old Brahma chick has a solid dried chunk of what seems to be poop, but it’s below her vent. Her vent is open. What is this and how do I get it off? It is seriously solid. You can see her vent right near my rings, and the chunk is below that.

She's in trouble, yo need to get that off. It'll soften easily with water and patience. I use a qtip and a cup of very warm water. Drip drops where it meets the skin, keep dripping until it's loosening. Don't pull you can prolapse the vent.

Also check your brooder temp. You want most of the brooder no warmer than the room. One little warm spot only. Use a thermometer to check both ends of the container. What is the brooder box?

12 square foot brooder for 6 chicks. I literally just got them home and noticed her butt. It isn’t blocking the vent, it is below her vent....I read something somewhere just now about an umbilical cord and if you try to remove it you risk pulling the chicks bowels out?!?! Now I’m worried that’s what it is.

Here’s without red light. My daughter is holding her tail feathers up so you can see better...

The vent, just below my daughters finger, doesn’t seem to be plugged...but it’s the clump below that that I’m worried about.

Your heat lamp may be a bit too high. And it should be at one end or the other, not in the middle. They are clustered up under the lamp, which is a sign that they are a bit chilled. Pasty butt is most commonly an indication of chicks being too cool or too hot. But any potential sources of stress could cause it.
