Most stressed animals can self mutilate but that usually takes a lot of stress, has other symptoms along with it, and doesn't last long unless you are failing to keep them safe and healthy or they are completely mentally unstable.
There are various genetic disorders in dogs that lead to odd behavior. Also all dogs and cats have been found to suffer at least the equivalent of most human mental disorders. Many of our antidepressants, anxiolytics, and antipsychotics are also used in dogs and cats if the owner is willing to pay that amount. I've seen some flat out insane horses as well. Go to the low end auction houses and you'll see some critters nearly killing themselves or humans around them. I have an insane rabbit. She's attacked me from the ground when loose and attacked inanimate objects in her cage when you are feeding, watering, or handling rabbits near her cage. Whether the cause is learned/environmental or genetic you can most definitely have very unstable critters.
Alright, alright, my rabbit aint crazy . . .
Ive had her for around 2-3 months now, and she was a rescue.
She is in much better shape physically and mentally than when I got her.
After all, she went from a cage that she could barely turn around in and being fed only all-you-can-eat cheap pellets, to a nice big hutch and good quality food and lotsa hay and fresh greens.
She has "toys" and such to stimulate her(she loves her pinecone), and gets tons of ground time and interactions with other rabbits.
I have 17 total rescues, including a mom that gave birth to 3 kits about 1.5 months ago, so I kinda got a little experience, and have read extensivley on this subject.
Anyways, like I said, she has never let a male breed her that Ive seen, I know she is a fairly old rabbit, I want to say I remember the folks that gave her up said they had her for 6 yrs, but Im not 100% sure.
She is definatley the oldest rabbit I have.
After my original posting earlier today, I looked a bit closer at the plucked hair and the hutch flooring around it, and there are definate blood drops kinda spattered around, not a like a bloodbath, but enough drops to notice upon close inspection.
I did/do not see any blood on her, and I did not see any clumpy bloody chunks to indicate afterbirth or "parts" of eaten babies.
You can actually see the drops of blood in the 3rd pic of my OG post, I noticed it when I posted the pics and it turned out it is in fact blood.
Now I cant be 100% certain that she has never bred with a rambunctious male here, but I have spent hours and hours observing my rabbits and their interactions when in groups on the ground, and I know who likes who and who doesnt . . .
I have never seen her show any interest in breeding and she has had plenty of chances.
I have always read that they will pull hair from a day up to just before she kindles.
Even a false pregnancy should be the result of the act of breeding, to my understanding.
I know its POSSIBLE that she totally turncoated on me and bred during some set of a few minutes when I wasnt directly watching her and the others, but from what I know and have seen of this rabbit it is very IMPROBABLE.
I just got home, and looked in her box but there are no babies.
She has definately been inside there, but I dont really see a "nest" in the proverbial sense of the word.
It does not appear to me that she has pulled anymore hair or tried to form an actual nest with the box I gave her, yes I filled it with hay and made the start of a nest with my hand and placed the wad of hair in.
I guess maybe she was just practicing . . . I hope
I really dont want her to be prego as her unplanned pregnancy(IF there is one) is not part of my plan.

I had a friend who had a mentally unstable cat. So much that the vet actually prescribed antidepressants. It was extremely aggressive to everyone but her. That cat was a demon.
Your rabbit is probably not crazy. You would know by now.
