Is this RIR a rooster or just a developing hen?

13-14 weeks old Rhode island red. Rooster or Hen?

It's a hen! At around her age they are beginning to mature into laying hens making their combs and wattles turn red and grow larger. She is cute!

Yeah that’s a hen. A rooster would have much bigger comb and wattles than that. When a hens face starts to get more red it means she’s getting closer to laying.

I would go with hen myself. Hens can have a big crest and waddle as well, they can even have big fighting claws, the one thing that hens are generally always missing is the rooster tail fan. I have a number of hens with the same coloring, but mine have a good 3/4 inch to 1 inch crest and reasonably good sized waddles.

An interesting note, if a hen has an infection that damages her good ovary she will actually take on the physical traits and behavior of a rooster. The amount of variability can be a bit confusing at times, but you eventually get a sense between the look and behavior who is what.
