Is this true?

What's that old proverb? " We can judge the heart of a man by his treatment of animals"

ok sorry op for your thread being hijacked, we would love to know the outcome of conversation with teacher please?

My boys are a distance from the house but they start before 4:00 a.m.....I love it!

Roosters were meant to crow and strut......if they can't their lives probably are hardly worth living.

It doesn't have to be a shoebox for it to be cruelty. How would you like to be shoved in a dark box all day and brought out only once a day, just because you do what God intended for you to do?

I don't think it's harsh at all. I think maybe the original poster didn't realize that it might be cruel... they only said they had heard that putting their roo in a box might keep him from crowing. We are letting them know that it's cruelty. I don't think it's harsh at all.

I'm guessing they will find another way to deal with their roo.

Did you happen to notice the signature block and consider the source. They have "One brother, two parents, and two chicks". Obviously this is a younger person, who had a question based on something they heard. Instead of jumping on them about cruelty and suggesting someone was going to come take their pets away (another member). You could have made it a positive experience, and said something more intelligent like harewizard said which was more appropriate.

Two things -

1. It will not stop the rooster from crowing and will be a miserable life for the rooster. Spoken from 18 years of raising chickens.

2. There is a huge difference between a "harsh" response and a reality check. The responses here have been simple statements about the reality of the proposed situation and why it will not only not work but would also amount to inhumane treatment.

Several hours?

Tantamount to death for a rooster. I am not a touchy-feely, awwwww, my babies kind of chicken owner. I am also not a hard hearted pro breeder who must cull. But I call my chickens "working pets". Even as such, I would NEVER torment any animal in such a way.

I think the OP has let her youth and enthusiam cloud common sense and needs to think it through a bit further. She does have a lot on her plate right now, so I went easy on her. Normally, I would have blasted.

Old enough to own birds/pets and be a part of the forum, then old enough to hear the truth about keeping animals. It would be cruel to keep any chicken in a dark box. I'm sure most all of us are very aware of the OP's age.

Katy, as always right on the money! When did common sense and good animal husbandry become "harsh?" Far better to be straight forward and honest rather than to mislead anyone regardless of their age.
