You can get brown eggs at the mega-mart, but they usually cost more and sometimes you can find organic.

I have always preferred brown, I'm pretty sure its a childhood fondness/memory from growing up on the farm.
 
I think most people in the states associated brown eggs with fresh farm eggs and white with store bought. The reason more white eggs are sold st the stores are commercial chicken companies use leghorn because they lay well and cage well. Cageing a chicken is why I decided to raise my own. Its so cruel IMO to keep a chicken caged 24/7 never to see sunshine or eat a bug or grass. For commercial companies it cost more to raise brown layers than white layers.
 
I don't know what breeds are used for commercial egg production in the UK, but over here the Leghorn is the commercial egg layer for mass production. Leghorns are fairly small and lay a large white egg. They are very efficient at converting feed to eggs so that keeps feed costs down. So most people over here got used to buying white eggs in the store and now think brown eggs are exotic.

I don't know how the brown egg became standard in the UK. It's all about what you get used to. There is no difference in nutrition or taste just because they shells are brown or white.

I grew up eating brown eggs, ate white eggs during most of my working adult life, and now eat brown eggs because that is the breeds I raise. It makes no difference to me.
 
Wow pretty much all eggs bought here in shops are now free range, i guess thats why you don't see many whites.
Its alot easier for people to free range i guess as we only have a few predators to look out for. Thats my theory anyway i could be way off lol
 
I think I have always preferred brown eggs - but then again - the brown eggs are always the ones i get fresh - so they do taste better than the old ones I get from the store.

Our store sells brown eggs - but charges almost $3 a dozen - and they are smaller then the eggs I get from my girls....

As a child, I decided that I liked brown eggs best. I thought they tasted better. It wasn't until I was older that I understood that it was just that they came from a better source. The same is true of milk in my experience. We've gotten so used to grain-fed, homogenize, pasteurized milk that most folks are put off by the real thing. I love it when spring rolls around and new grass shoots up and the cows get into the wild garlic...that's just me though.

For me, color doesn't make a difference. DH prefers white although he does eat brown.

My co-workers love brown and two of my Black Stars lay an almost white egg--kinda a neat ivory color--and they said they want me to stop putting white eggs in with the brown.

I like the eggs that are white on the outside edge when you cook them and yellow in the center.

I rarely know what color the shell is since we have all colors and the DW usually cooks them. I find it funny that anyone actually thinks there is a taste difference.
