Chicken math is like this:
You say, "I want 20 chickens"
So you build your coop to house 40 chickens.
Then you buy 10 chicks to start with--just to get your feet wet.
Then you realize incubating is fun!
Oh, and the farmer down the street has some extra culls...
And "I really cant pass up such a swinging deal on hatching eggs"
Then you discover banties, which 3 banties= 1 LF
5 chicks=1 banty, so you can have 15 chicks for every standard chicken,
Roos dont count, since you will eventually eat/cull most of them,
Layers don't count until you CATCH them laying an egg.
Project birds are "Special" and aren't part of the main count.
Disease comes through and wipes out the weaker ones, but it hurts so you don't subtract the ones who died.
Since you have several "mini-flocks" who brooded together, you are physically unable to count them all at once. You have to count them "3 black ones, 2 chippy-cheeks, 4 funnyhats, 6 stupidroos"....
