Just set up incubator full of eggs..... Is today day one or is it 24 hours later,.? Is it better to turn the eggs twice a day or more? Any helpful hints on things I have not thought of..? This is my first rodeo!

check your mail box sending you instructions.....

When you set the eggs, that started day one. Say you set them at 0600. Tomorrow, at 0600, will be the end of day one and the beginning of day two.

Best to turn them at least three times per day, always an odd number of times so as not to cause the chick to stick to the same spot of the shell.

Best of luck - any more questions, feel free to ask!

Based on this, then, do the chickens hatch on average at the beginning of Day 21 or do they hatch AFTER Day 21 is completed?

They hatch after you have gotten to the breaking point of your impatience.

LOL!

Not really sure, now that you bring it up... I always read that the incubation process takes 21 days, so I would assume at the end of day 21.

Thank you everyone! I am very excited! I hope and pray that they all hatch and that they are all pullets. Is there an easy way to tell with the newbies other than the vent inspection? Is there any other way ? I heard that I could hold a chick in my hand and gently pick it up with my other hand with my thumb and forefinger causing the feet to lift off of my cupped hand. Cockerel fight fight fight trying to get loose and pullets just chill and stretch out...... Any truth to this?

ahhhh, Joy....*shaking head*...on some breeds you can tell by feather sexing...wings...let me send you a clip...crazy woman...what are you hatching????

OK, I FOUND IT....WATCH IT...WHEN THE WOMEN ARE ON THE CONVERER BELT SEXING THE CHICKS...YOU MIGHT HAVE TO PAUSE IT, TAKE IT BACK SOME, WATCH THE FIRST CHICK, PLAY IT, PAUSE IT...THATS HOW I WATCHED IT...NOW THIS WONT WORK FOR ALL BREEDS BUT HERE YOU GO:

Thank you Doe... You are a blessing... I am hatching Wheatons and Wheaton Blues, RIR and if she hurrys up and lays, WHITE ROCK.. I have a new to me 2 yr old White Rock in isolation just to be sure she is not bringing a disease in with her... From what I understand.... if she lays an egg within a week it will be fertile. She used to live with a WHITE leghorn Roo.. How long does the sperm sack last>?
