what to do now? it is ten days past the sinus explosion and there is still a huge bump and i'm wondering if it hurts or is still something that needs attention. his strength is back:

a side question: it appears our other silkie has a cold. we used isopropyl 'OH to wipe the crust off his nostrils so he can breath. and we cut the feathers on his head way back. but we heard gurggling and he is weak. yeah, eeks. is there something i can buy at tractor supply or Home & Orchard? i've heard of Avatron. i'm looking for some sort of cold medicine for chickens. i've also heard of a tablet

Tweety looks sooo much better! Keep up the good work and I hope he recovers fully!
Sorry you are having so much trouble with your birds. I don't have any solution though... hopefully someone on here will have an answer for you.

found this on another thread...

"ASTRINGENT SOLUTION

This solution can be used to treat young birds that show non-typical disease symptoms of poor growth. The solution can also be given to birds suffering from respiratory diseases that produce a large amount of mucus exudate. This solution will help "cut through" the mucus and allow it to be expelled easier.

Two quarts of apple cider vinegar diluted into 100 gallons of water
(4 teaspoons/gallon)

The tannin in the apple cider vinegar aide in removing any mucus or coating from the mouth, throat, or intestinal tract. Nutrients and drugs are more readily absorbed. Offer this solution as the only drinking water source for two to three day intervals."

me again... I have used apple cider vinegar for a number of things over the years and it does amazing things... it's not a "med" so I don't think it will hurt... so maybe it might be worth a try? Good luck.

Yeah. THX All!

to treat pneumonia or the gurgles = terramyacin or neomyacin. found at feed stores. it is powder and you mix it in their water. the feed store where we live was out so i went with tetracyclin 10. all were < $5

electrolytes, etc mix is a good idea in stressful weather, esp.

well, it is an ocular infection (i forgot the correct name). treated with "nfs Puffer" also found at feed stores. i think duravet makes it but not sure. anyhow, the yellow stuff coming out of the eye is called, cheese (white blood cells trying to fight off infection).

Tweety seems fine. there is still some discharge and lots of small bubbles coming from his tear duct. it seems that the huge lump where i'd guess his sinuses are located is decreasing. guess this is where the bubbles are coming from.

keeping the two silkies dry is now a priority. we also cut feathers on their heads to get more air around eyes and nostrils.

thanks for all your thoughts during his recovery.

Tweety has been attacked twice by a dog, caught-up in fly tape, this crazy ocular infection, and much more. if that poor bird didn't have bad luck he'd have no luck at all.

i believe so. he/she turns its head and appears to use the eye.

i'm still concerned about the bubbles in his eye. apparently coming from the front corner of his eye.

it seems when we clean the eye with rubbing alcohol the swelling where the sinus would be increases again. we are keeping them dry as possible and hoping nature can do a better job.
