Nope, it won't last at all. It wants to be more active than its mama is ready to let it be, though. And now, it has one Blue Orpington and one Barred Rock sibling to keep it entertained under there.
I have one Delaware, a hatchery product. Of my four girls, she is the least friendly. Absolutely HATES to be picked up but I've finally figured out that she will perch on my arm fairly reliably if I need to move her. I don't know if it's useful to have a hatchery chicken picture to compare with your gorgeous birds, but here's one from today of my Lily:
How old is Lily? She has good leg color, but can't see her that well in the picture, probably the light quality.
TimG, you may want to see these next two pictures.
Just to have something to compare Isaac to, size-wise, I did snap a couple pics of him with my big blue tank, Suede, in the background. Suede is probably 14-15 lb and approx 18" or so across the chest. Those two square off at the fence now. Ike used to jump back a few steps when Suede did a run/stomp thing at him, but now, he holds his ground. When I tried to get the picture, they were head to head, but Isaac walked away, of course.
Cynthia, your photographs are just marvelous! It's bad enough that I stare at my chickens all day, but now I just want to stare at yours!
I brought Lily inside to try to get better pix of her for you. As I said, she does NOT like to be handled. I keep reading how sweet Delawares are but she is the feistiest by far of my four girls - AND, of course, the leader of the pack
If they were in high school, I think she'd be the "popular girl". I'm guessing, from what I've read on this thread, that there's not as much contrast in her markings as the standard would suggest. Her feet have gotten a lot more yellow in the past week or so.
LOL, well, actually, I thought he'd look way smaller than he does next to big Suede.
bawk, your girl has a way to go before her markings are her final ones. This breed does evolve over time in that regard. The first Delawares I had were really flighty and aggressive, from McMurray parent stock. It took some convincing to get me to try them again.
