Issues with neighbors dogs

Legally and morally, your fencing is to keep your animals in, not other animals out. The dirt bags or just plain stupid that allow their dogs to run around are legally responsible and morally responsible for the damage done. But, one cannot go around doing pew pew on neighbors so the dog pays the price. Use the three S method and don't feel bad about having to do it.

Fencing is meant to do both depending on how easy your animal is to prey upon.

People hold dogs in such a high regard for some reason. I have no faith in a dogs impulse control. I would bet that 100% of dogs get away from their owners at some point. Betting against that costs people their chickens on occaision.
Of course the dog shouldnt be there, no one is arguing that. Its just silly to expect that a dog will never be there.

Its silly to put the safety of your pets and livestock in another persons hands too, especially when they dont even look out for their own animals.

No, the law in most states, as in I don't believe there are any more open range states left, requires people to fence their animals in or pay damages they do to other's property.

Enough of us scold the newbies for using chicken wire, going with hardware cloth is a common sense decision, but based upon your thought process if the neighbor had elephants or a two thousand pound bull or buffalo it would be your responsibility to pay for a fence strong enough to protect your own flock.
