About two years ago when I hatched my first batch of ducklings, I dreamed of how they would be. I dreamed they’d be sweet, cuddly, that they’d follow me around. Unafraid.
Most importantly, I dreamed that, once grown, I could walk them down to my pond in the morning.
Course, some of this came true. They were sweet, and cuddly, and they followed me around. But it didn’t last. Suddenly, I couldn’t be near them without them taking off. My dream of walking my ducks down to the pond seemed to be lost.

Fast forward to now. My first flock didn’t work out. Most were rehomed for various reasons, and a few succumbed to predators. With 3 ducks, I rebuilt the flock and hatched my 2nd batch of ducklings early this year. The biggest change I made was moving their coop to my back porch. It allows them to see & hear me more and for me to hang out with them easier.
Let me tell you, my experience with these ducks? Complete 180.
I can’t go anywhere without my ducks following me. Getting hay, refilling water, feeding other animals? My ducks are right there. I can walk mere inches away from them, and they barely bat an eye. They respond to my voice and come when called.
This morning, I walked down to the pond with them. I was the last to walk down. Most ran off ahead, but 2 ducks near the back saw me walking down and decided to stop and wait for me to catch up. Once the 3 of us got down, everyone else called out to me and ran back up to say hello! I sat down in the grass, and everyone ran circles around me, chewing on my shirt and chattering away before returning to the pond to start their day. It’s a dream come true
