It came from outta nowhere!!!

Wow, very good, Andy. Yeah, I'm from Hawaii (Oahu, not Kauai, where the chicken problem has become a statewide nuissance), and my folks were from Cali. Good detective work there, folks!!

I don't think that black rooster is the dad of any chicks yet. I always thouight he was too young, and doesn't seem to hang around any of the hens that are there. How old does a roo need to be before he starts doin' his thang?

Does a hen really care how "young" a rooster may be? He hasn't even started crowing yet!

The daddy of the just-hatched little chicks in the video is probably that white rooster. As I stated, he tends to mount both gals from the same batch, but doesn't do much else to the others aside try to strut in front of them. I don't get any "protection" vibe from him either. He seems to only care about himself.

To be honest, wild chickens aren't too rare here, mostly in country areas, though usually in small, somewhat confined numbers, nowhere near as bad as on Kauai. I feed them at a church not far from my house. The church staff have told me twice (in the past year) how they want to get rid of the chickens because they are a "pest". No details, but I assume their fecal matter and general loitering are the reasons (they are mostly quiet!). While I love these chickens, I also understand how the church feels. I don't think the church will put money up to have them humanely removed, but I often worry if they may condone free catching or worse. I've seen one occasion where a group of boys tried catching them, saying they wanted one "as a pet", but fear he may end up as dinner or maybe even a victim of the illegal cockfighting rings in the valley over. There really is nothing I can do, so I try to feed them outside of church hours, and just hope to see my lovelies as the days come......

...Okay! Don't mean to leave on a bad note.

For what it's worth, I appreciate all of your warm comments!! I suppose going out and feeding wild chickens (let alone having them jump on you!) can look pretty ridiculous in the eyes of anyone who doesn't have a passion for them.

I think it's wonderful;) Do your thing:cool:
I spent 6 weeks hand rearing my hens and they r nowhere near that friendly. Mostly they just look at me and r starting to give me testy cock-eyed looks. Wish I could have a couple of your sweet hens, and that white one w/ the black spots is fab. It's my fav.

Oh my goodness! To each his own and all that, but I love that rooster! I love his strut. My roo is built like a mack truck so he doesn't strut, he stomps.
Since I love that roo and you don't, do you think he'd give up the good life in Hawaii for a cozy farm in Arkansas?

The video was great.
Welcome to BYC!

The one you don't like, the white one, looks like an easter egger rooster. I don't care for the males of that breed either.

You could ditch him easy. Mama hens protect their babies quite well on their own.

I love the pied (white with splashes of color) young rooster in your group, very pretty! It looks like he and the young black one will have gorgeous tails when they get older. Just keep giving them treats and food, they'll tame up to you in time. It's always easier with the younger ones.

They are a lovely and friendly flock of birds. You don't realize how rare it is to have so many friendly birds in one group! My recommendation is to build yourself a coop with attached run and lure them in. It's pretty inexpensive to build from recycled materials. The only real expense is the hardware cloth for the run space. I have a coop built in an A-frame style which was super easy to put together, all built from recycled materials. It ain't the Taj Mahal, but with a coat of paint slapped over everything it looks very neat and tidy. Chickens are the easiest pet ever to maintain. They make cats look high maintenance. They are inexpensive to feed, have few health problems, are tough as nails, are fun to have around, and make you breakfast every morning. You obviously enjoy them and they obviously like and trust you, so...

Welcome to the club!

Let's not forget Oviedo, Florida, which is northeast of Orlando. They hang out downtown and are frequently seen around the Popeye's Chicken. Seriously. You can also buy bumper stickers that say "I Brake for the Oviedo Chickens".

These aren't them, however. I am familiar with Oviedo gang.
