White eggs are fun to candle..... too bad those are not my favorite to see in my egg basket
I like them just because they add contrast to the other eggs and make their color pop more :)
That being said, I only have brown, green, and blue egg layers. :barnie

(But that does give me a good reason to do some chicken math, doesn’t it?)

With about 5-6 days left until hatch the brooder is now pretty much complete. Only things left are to add a then layer of pine shavings to cover floor along with some clothespins to hold towel in place. Not sure I like the homemade feeder yet! Here's some photos.
The new heat plate is in place and ready to go.

A note for @aart knowing how much you just love the Vertical nipples. I am happy to report that over a 2day period under 1cup of water dripped out. Very please with that and I think the benefits of VN over an open waterer are worth the little drip especially with the built in water catcher.:old

Looks great. I reccoi using just paper towels for the floor for the first few days.
So you can keep an eye on their poop and clean easier.

Now I can see the bends in the catch pan, have you lifted it up to see if any water underneath there?
Did you take the mesh off the top?

Curious about the feeder... holes low in can for feed to come thru?
Is can attached to dish?
Dish might be too deep, but they'll probably just climb right into dish.

Ditto Dat^^^
They'll eat feed sprinkled on floor at first...until they figure out the feeder.
Might want to put feeder on floor at first too, sprinkle feed next to it.

Can't wait to see chicks in there!!

No water at all under pan everything is draining as it should. I am keeping the fiberglass screening over catch pan to provide them footing.
Feeder I don't care for myself, just playing around making stuff while waiting for chicks. Yes I have slots in the bottom sides around the coffee can for food to come out. I screwed coffee can to planter base. I think I am going to head to TSC and buy the round little feeder.

Do you take out the turning tray at lock down? Do you line the bottom with paper towel over the screen? Do you fill all the channels with water regardless of humidity level? Or do you go for the 60%-80% humidity? Once chicks are dry how often do you pull them out? 4 1/2 days and counting!!:wee
