It Never Fails

Do skunks and badgers kill chickens?

Is your coop secure to stop them getting in at night?

If the coop was predator proof you might save yourself a lot of time and money on all those traps and getting rid of the animals.

Our coop is predator proof if they are all closed up right :lau
We have not lost a chicken to a predator yet. I have small kids and we live in a rabid county. The skunks and badgers were on our yard and near our kids. It isn't a matter of killing for the fun of it, it is about the health and wellness of our family. We do not hunt for the fun of it. We love our deer. We do not let people hunt on our property - some are very careless. Chickens or not the unwanted critters have to go.

I just reread this post and it sounded like we killed the deer, we did not. We love to watch the deer.

Oh I see about the rabies. How common is it in your country? Do many people get the disease? I live in Thailand the we have rabies here, but I have not heard of anyone getting it. I was bitten by a stray dog and went to the hospital to get the anti rabies injection just in case.

Is you can vaccinated for rabies? I have a small dog that I got vaccinated.

The biggest carriers of the disease here are bats. One night I was taking some rubbish to throw out and I had nothing on my feet. I got a shock when I stepped on a live bat. I just stood on its wing and he wrapped itself over my foot, but as soon as I lifted my foot up it flew off. It was a bit scary that!

If the skunk and badger were out at night they would not pose a danger for your children? Just seems a shame to kill them when the are not doing anything wrong.

You do know the deer also spread potentially deadly disease to humans too such as Lyme Disease with more than 16000 cases each year in the United States.

Oops, it says country, It should say county. I live in the USA. There is only a case of rabies about once every 5 years but that is often enough to make it a danger.

The badgers and skunks are short of food right now and that is why they are in the yard in the day.

Yes, deer carry ticks that can have lyme disease. I found a brown dog tick on a kid just yesterday. I have also seen the small deer tick that carries lyme disease. Scarry, but life goes on. We are always on the lookout for the bad side of living in the country.
