It was only a matter of time....

Sorry to not update in so long. This has honestly turned more into some hilarious comedy rather than a 'we might lose our chickens' drama.

So I talked to the officer that was at my house the next day. She's really cool, totally supportive of us. Said that the call that came in was from a HYSTERICAL lady screaming about chickens being in the road. (Funny, we weren't home and ours were in their coop)

They were just a few houses away doing a rental inspection and came right over.

No chickens, anywhere. The had to ask neighbors who had chickens (our neighbors do know, no biggie) and they told them it was us. Officers knocked on the door, etc. No answer (because we weren't here).

She and her partner walked around to the alley and looked over the fence gate (it's only 4 ft there). As they stood there talking about the obvious lack of loose chickens, the girls came out of the coop and into the lower run.

She thought they were adorable, looked very happy and well cared for, loved the coop. It was clear they were securely contained.

Anyway, we DO have to go before counsel and get a....I can't remember what it's called. Piece of paper saying that our livestock are approved at the end of Sept. We don't see any issues arising from that, and are fine to keep our chickens in the yard until then.

-----------------

The neighbor that we thought turned us in actually tracked us down and let us know it was NOT her. I believe her, the husband does not. Either way, it doesn't matter because she won't show up to our counsel appointment (neighbors may come and object) and make a fuss. She's come over several times since then to fawn over the chickens. Says she had them on the farm when she was a child, but never saw any as pretty or tame as ours.

----------------

This morning, we got our first egg....so everyone here if very excited and the girls got lots of treats today!

Just wanted to update this to say that we went before the zoning board Thursday night and received a variance. We were judged to be 'excellent stewards of our poultry'. It was a pretty funny experience as all the other cases were typical zoning things (adding on to churches, etc)

The also encouraged me to petition city counsel to update that ordinance. I hope to do so in the future.
