hello i am new to turkeykingdom i get catalogs from murray mcmurray, stombergs, burkett, meyer etc. they have blue slate as blue slate. a neighbor said his were tennessee blue slates and wondered why i mentioned heritage breed in my wording he thought it was a new name for blue slate on some poultry sites i see even more names am i missing something?? are there different veins and what do i need to know. clueless in western ky. thanks kyfarm
 
He may have been talking about where his came from? To my knoweldge a Blue Slate is a Blue Slate. Some of the varieties do have different strains for example, a Standard bronze and Whishard bronze, they are both bronze but different strains. The heritage breed means they are self reproducing and some of them date back many years. The other breed is the Broad Breasted which are not self reproducing (they can but that's not what they were bred for) The BB type are the Cornish cross of turkeys - max weight gain in shortest amount of time.
 
The term heritage turkey is a new one. They use to be called standard turkeys as compared to a broadbreasted (double breasted)comercial turkey. State is just one of many standard turkeys.
