It's going to be super cold.

Guy on craigslist was wanting several IB breeding aged hens. He was only 10 miles away from me,actually I thought I was the only one in the county with peacocks around here but anyways,,he said he lost 4 peahens a few weeks ago during our first cold snap. I feel rather fortunate because I didn't lose any peas, not even from the 2013 hatched group.I heard our local weatherman yesterday say towards the end of this month, one computer model is showing several days with temps NOT getting above zero,,much colder than what we experienced here 2 weeks ago and it's supposed to stick around several days,,I sure hope that forecast is wrong.

I didn't really expect there to be much ice. In the past sometimes the peafowl's water gets a very very thin layer of ice and they can still get a drink without me taking the ice out (I still take it out anyways) but today was different. I have never seen this much ice in the water before! Wow it was like an inch and at first when I tapped it I though the whole thing was frozen. Now that I know there is a big ice issue, tomorrow before school I will stop by my Grandmas and take out the ice.

My boys looking at the big ice block. Peep is the one there closest to the Ice. The white is of course Frosty, the young male is Smarty and the other adult male is Alto.

We have all of the outside faucets dripping to keep the lines from freezing and the shower next to the pool did not want to drip, so we had to just let it have a little stream of water running. Well this is what that little stream turned into. A giant ice cycle. I have seen ice cycles on trips to other places, but not in Florida.

It was really cool you could hear the ice popping.

Some unfortunate azalea leaves.

Ice cycles

I liked the pattern in this one.
Nice photos
All the ponds froze over , poor ducks and geese could not figure out why they could not float.

The pipes to my well froze even with insulation and being inside with a light but i got it thawed out with a space heater, bad thing i did not know it was frozen and was washing and sucked out all the water from the tank and lines, i had orange water for days.

I can imagine the sweat dripping off your forehead now,,,,ahhh,,the distant memories of the opressive heatwaves with tons of humidity we have here every summer.Tonight is supposed to get down to the -4 range.I'm used to water bowls being a solid, large sized hockey puck piece of ice. Worming next month maybe a challenge.

Zaz,I don't think I have any extra hens to sell him unless he wants bronze. And if he is losing them because of the cold he evidently don't have proper housing and they are better off here with me.

I'd love some bronze hens... How much does it cost to ship them? They would be warm here, lol.

Next 5 days here not above 10 degrees,,,several nites way below zero with wind chills around 25 below. I cannot imagine peas in an outside pen without a enclosure to be locked into if necessary. I would venture to say mid 20's protein feed levels would be minimum if the birds had no protection from the cold wind. And that may not be high enough.
