Margaret, it is extremely dangerous. I recommend against it. Look at the photos of fried toes and crippled peas. It's not about what temperature it comes on, it's about how hot the tape gets. The peas don't realize their toes are burning

older heat tape may have been safer. Newer stuff gets hotter, depends on specs of particular tape. Also, tape can malfunction and your first clue there's a problem is a crippled bird. Can you just heat the bird house itself? And still give a carpeted roost?
Did you see the photos of the birds with the crippled burned toes? Some birds had feet and even lower leg fall off completely. It is dangerous stuff!

Mandy and I live in Ik about 120 mi apart there is about a4• temperature difference. She has a high spading and I ask her she kept it warm and she said a heat lamp like I am using now so I guess no heat tape!
