I'm not sure how popular it is, but it is a name that I have heard my whole life so it must be used fairly often. My 9 year-old son picked it out so he has heard it before as well.
 
You can, but you have to be really careful with the heat tape. some people have had it heat up too much and hurt their birds. There was a topic on here about using heat tape for peafowl where we talked about issues with it and how you should always monitor if it is getting too hot. I am at college on my phone now but later today I can try and find that topic and link to it.
