It's not "swine flu" anymore. It's the H1N1 flu virus.

I'm not worried about this at all. I don't get actually sick sick much. Maybe bodyaches and some seasonal things. But other than that, I guess my immune system is up to snuff.

There's not been many cases in NC, probably mostly because we're on the other side of the country from where the main problems are. There have been two reported cases in counties nowhere near me though.

Besides, now they're questioning just how strong this stuff is. Not as bad as they thought it'd be. It's just easy to spread and is making a lot of people sick.

Usually pneumonia. Very young children, old people in frail health, or people who are immunocompromised (cancer and organ transplant patients, HIV+ people, hepatitis patients, etc.) don't have immune systems that are able to fight flu virus effectively; they often develop secondary bacterial infections that become pneumonia. Also, people with asthma sometimes have very severe reactions to the infection or to secondary bronchitis. Not always, just sometimes, depending on how well their medications are working to control it.

Zombies????? Hello! And we actuelly believe anything the media says?

I actually do have a lot of food, water and stuff.... but not cause I am scared of the swine flu, or any pandemic. I cant get into why, here....

But I do think we could see a pandemic sometime, it only makes since. Diseases WANT to survive, so they mutate and evolve to evade our methods of killing them. In fact, we had a strain of (EEEEWWW

) hair lice that were resistent to the insecticide used in anti-lice medicine.

But what is this about the plastic and duct tape? I missed and diddnt even know it! AAAHHH I could have DIED!

Yup. We have enough to keep us for a month at least, except for the animal food. I have trouble keeping ahead on that. But I am just getting figured out how much they eat. I do live in a an area where we could just let them free range if we had too.

I totally dont trust the government either. But I also dont trust other governments, and I think its rediculous to think that no one will try to attack us. We go 60 or 70 years, and everyone forgets what it is like to live in fear of war.

Sorry for the rant. We are totally off topic now, so I will shut up.

They make great hiking food.. Because they are so light weight... Or camping food...

On a different note.. Zombie Swine Flu.... Where do they get that.. I read that link with the article about it.. I think people go way over board.. Its just the flu.. People die from all forms of flu.. Its just the way nature goes..

I just hope it dont come to our area.. Expecially if it is bad enough to need hospital or doctor care. Only my kids have health insurance.. If my husband and I get sick, we are out of luck..

They were calling it swine flu because the strain is related to, and genetically much like the swine flu's of 1918 and 1976.

I think the panic that caused has probably prompted them to call it H1N1 since less people are aware thats the same classification as the other flu strains previously mentioned.

Whatever they call or called it, its gotten FAR too much hype. Although Iam still waiting to hear of it mutating again.

You can have my share of MREs, too. I think I would rather eat weeds and bugs and shoe leather, but DH always keeps a few "for emergencies." My friend, the day we must eat those things, civilization has officially ended and cannibalism is coming soon.

As far as influenza mortality...a different strain makes it's rounds every year -actually a few strains are out there but one is predominant. If it's Influenza A it can be pretty nasty. Influenza B is generally mild. So the mortality rates differ every year. Mostly it is pneumonia that ultimately kills usually in older or young or immunocompromised people.

The Spanish flu was a mutant. Something much different. It appears that this flu is not as virulent as the Spanish flu. It may become one of the circulating viruses next flu season though which would be problematic in the public health sense because it is much different than the current flu and few people have immunity. But that would mean just that more people would get the "flu" therefore a larger number of deaths.

The H1N1 or whatever it happens to be is the proteins on the outside of the Virus - it is just used for identification purposes.

Anyway, we should all be ok with our leftover Y2K stash, yes?
