It's offical I am the worst Hatcher

3chickens I forgot to ask earlier if you'd tried candling the egg in question to see if it's alive??? I know you'd said that it's hard to see through them but it might be worth a shot just to see if there's any movement. Is there anyone around you who has candled before that could be a help to candle?

3chickens
To candle an egg you need to be in a dark room and take a small flashlight and put it to the big end of the egg. I use a small maglight. You should be able to see the air cell at the end of the egg and if you look on down into the the dark part you should be able to see movement if there is any. This is all depending on the egg being fertile if it is not the egg will be clear from end to end. Keep in mind that white eggs are much easier to candle than brown eggs.

I know my 1588 Genesis is high. Right now it is reading 101, and it should be down to 100.

I am afraid to lower it though. For one thing, I have eggs in it. Right, I know I should have regulated it BEFORE I put eggs in it, but it is a Genesis, I thought it would be right.

It is not WAY off, but I know it should be lower.

Does anyone know how to do it? There are instructions with it, but they do not make much sense to me.

I have cleaned up this thread because it has a valuable discussion. I think that some folks just need to either take advice or leave it, but please don't be so thin-skinned that no one hears the other due to hurt feelings. What you think is insulting may just be a blunt writing style--we can't hear tone on the web, remember! It takes lots of time and extra words to convey tone in the written word.
There are veteran hatchers who would never use the egg carton method, tilt the bator, etc. They do not understand why others want to try all these unusual methods when if you learn the use the bator the way it's always been used, become a successful "bator jockey", if you will. There are so many other factors to a successful hatch, including the health of the breeding stock, shipping damge, etc, that your lack of chicks at the end may have little to do with the incubator itself. Please keep that in mind.

This next hatch I have added some Aracana and EE eggs hopefully I will be able to see something thru those.. I will be setting them today...
And opening the other eggs to see what I have done wrong...

I have a question! I have a Hova Bator circulated air bator and on my 2nd hatch. My first hatch had 0 live chicks, they were all rotten/and or died at some point in incubation. I am on day 18 on this hatch and am using 2 thermometers in the bator. One is the cheapo one that came with the bator, and the other one is a combo thermometor/hygrometer that I got at Lowes (about 15 bucks, digital, etc). The thermo/hygro reads 1 degree higher than the cheapo thermometer that came with the unit.

I am so worried this hatch will turn out like my first one. I am trying to keep the temperature in between the two thermometers...I try to candle the eggs but the shells are so thick I can't see much.

I guess my question is how to tell which thermometer is more accurate and which one I should go by? Should I take either of the plugs out to let some humidity out? I filled up both water reservoirs but the humidity ran 77%, so I took one plug out.

Thanks!

3chickens, if you open one and see breathing, use a q-tip and wet the membrane and stick it back in the incubator.

I had a very low temp on my first incubating escapade and when I opened 1 egg to see what was wrong
ep.gif
it was alive and that was 3 days past the due date. I wrapped the baby in a hot cloth and put it back. The next day, I had 6 out of 12 hatched. I could not see anything either when candling I was just learning also.

I took a regular table, disassemb,e the top to where it was just a bulb, put in a bright light, got a shoe box from the post office (not an actual shoe box, but one for shipping shoes) and cut a small hole in the end to candle eggs and it works great. I use a brighter light so it is easier to see through the darker eggs.

Good luck and still sending hatching vibes just incase.

After going back and reading this and watching my hens, I have to say one thing:
Has anyone ever seen their broody hen stand the eggs up on end as they would be in an egg carton?
I think I have 100% hatch rate from my own eggs, due to hatching as the mother hen would and as for shipped eggs, you never know with them.

No I've not seen that though that's the position they're in in the auto turner.

Frankly I had tried the egg carton but I didn't feel it was worth the time it took to position them. I always felt "is it to close to the heating element?" & if there's 2 cartons in there they usually are too close etc. the hatch rate using them was ok but the auto turner I think has been a big difference with hatching rates for me. I do still use the carton(s) as I hold the eggs while gathering more. During hatching when the chicks are lawn bowling I do get unnerved watching that. LOL but having actually hatched using cartons too I think they were just as hard on the other existing eggs trying to hatch & I didn't see any difference in a cleaner bator & so now for hatching I do lay them on their sides.

Now if we could control the temp & humidity like the broody hen does....

They're certainly a LOT better at it.
