It's pretty disgusting...

Tis okay. I got over the ewwww factor on what my chickens eat a long time ago. It was about the same time I saw them bash a large frog to death on the side of outbuilding before they ripped that poor frog to pieces and everyone feasted.

It seemed strange when I read it. I wonder if with books like that they just give you the safest answer to questions like those? I am sure disease transfer has happened before but who knows? Was the meat cooked? Was the meat even fresh? I do know that when cannibalism includes eating the brains (obviously no one would feed brains) it does cause mad cow disease like symptoms, even in humans and the old cannibalistic tribes that they have found. If they did like the brains then I would be worried about Zombie Chickens before I would worry about the disease transfer.

Amen to that! I don't even let mine see their eggs in the light of day, unless they've already been cooked.

I think you're probably right, they give the safest answer. Of course I might think twice about feeding chicken brains anyhow. I don't eat em, from any species, so I wouldn't feed them to my animals. Mental picture of the itty bitty spatula you'd need to fry a chicken brain.

OT- Tell me about it. Last night I referreed in a roost fight (something else I know better than to do). Chloe, one of my lowest ranking flock members, needed a nice spot of the roost. I put her next to Lil' Bit, whom I've always assumed was the lowest ranking member of the flock. Lil' Bit had a fit and started repeatedly pecking Chloe, hard. I stuck my hand in between them and wham! Lil' Bit's beak connected with the palm of my hand in a very unpleasant way.
From now on I'll lock them up and walk away. Let them settle their own disputes.

Our kitchen is too small to have a table so our dining room is our living room, same room as where we have the brooder... It was hell getting over the guilty feeling I got when I would cook chicken breast or egg's and sit down with the DH to eat with 4 fuzzy little faces staring at us.

They're wondering why you're not sharing.

What you read may be a a caution related to prion diseases (like mad cow). Can you post the part that you read, or tell me what page, I can look in my copy of her book. I don't feed my chickens meat or feeds with animal products in them. I allow my chickens to free range and anything they eat on thier own is fair game, so they are not "vegetarians".
