I agree with it being worth extra to pay for just pullets, unless you LOVE roosters. Also, a hatchery has a reputation to protect, so you have that on your side (the farmer does too) but most importantly you are pretty sure to get healthy birds. I think it is wonderful you have such a great source though, but no, you were not HAD. I would love to have such a farm source, the knowledge is worth gold. But how dangerous to go there! You'd need a U-Haul loaded with traveling cages!

Don't feel bad at all, becaus you will get your chicks most of the time pullets, if the say so and if you order a vaccine, they will be vaccinated, I paied the same for mine and my friend sells chicks, but I just wanted certain breeds.

I buy unsexed chicks from a friend for $3, so you got a good price. The only reason I don't get from hatcheries is the shipping! WOWZA

Well, I had some bad luck too. So, I wanted a couple of Blue/Splash Orpington and Wyandotte pullets and I found a local breeder selling straitrun chicks.I traded 4 pure Ameraucana chicks that were 3 weeks old (Cree farms lines) for 3 blue wyandotte chicks and one blue orpington chick. I also paid the breeder $18 more for 2 more strait run orpingtons. She was selling her chicks for $6 and $9 each as straight run day-olds. I had paid $12 for the Ameraucana eggs from another local breeder and hatched the 4 chicks. I think I had 2 pullets and 2 cockerels with the Ameraucanas. So for a total of $30 cash and the cost of hatching/raising the 4 Ameraucanas, I got ONE splash orpington pullet. JUST, ONE! At least I think she's a pullet, LOL. The other 5 turned out to be cockerels that I ended up giving to a 4-h family.
