Ive never had chicks that im starting to hate!

I just introduced my two Welsummers to the great outdoors for this very reason. They're fully feathered and about 5-6 weeks old. Their first night out was in 30F weather and they did just fine even with no added heat. (I did cover their little coop with doubled over blue tarp, but no real heat). I made the decision after reading and asking in the "20 year" thread in the management forum. Great stuff there.

One of them even peeped loudly in her sleep. She peeped for food, peeped for water, peeped herself to sleep, and kept right on peeping in her sleep, peeped when she woke up..... They were the worst ever about dumping their food and water. It was a real chore keeping up with them! My first batch of chicks was two Ameraucanas, one BA, and one white silkie and they were fine, hardly any peeping and hardly any mess, even less poop combined than just the two WS. Even the two 8wk old pullets (BO and Red Comet) I got (my very first chickens) didn't make a lot of noise.

I'm going later on today or tomorrow to get some Black Australorps. I might take my chances and grab a couple of WS's again bc they lay pretty eggs..... hmmm, maybe not.

I think you'd be fine to put them out now as long as they have their feathers. Mine are doing a lot better now. The peeper has enough to occupy her little brain so she isn't as frantic. And they don't spill as much now either, go figure.

Im gonna wait until they are 8 weeks its been getting below freezing here.

Ouch - sorry your getting run over here Pandapaws!

I'm for eating what I've raised, at least I know I gave it a good life. My chickens aren't pets. They are cute, entertaining, and yes I get a bit attached. But at the end of the day - they are livestock.

Sounds like you just have some insistent babies - thank goodness they grow up quick. Just wanted to throw you some support.

Well, hang in there then. I do know what you mean about starting to "hate" them, lol! I started resenting mine a little too. I'm sure you're doing all you can to quiet them. Sometimes you get a loud one (or three). I also really get what you mean about unusually loud chicks. Let's hope our next batches are quieter and cleaner

I understand were you are coming from. My first batch of chicks were so calm and easy going (1 buff, 1 Black star, 1 JG and 3 production reds ). Had them in the living room in a huge tote and had no problem with them, water stayed up and relatively clean, food was scratched out but not extreme.
The next batch OMG! I got 3 SLW and 2 ducks. First off I had to separate the ducks because the chicks kept pecking the webbing on the duck's feet. Then they kept dirtying their water so I had to change it out 4-5 times a day (who knew pine chips could soak up water so much). I had them in the same brooder tote that the others had been in but they seemed to be completely unhappy no matter what I did. Moved the heat lamp to try and find that perfect temp for them, no go. I couldn't wait to get them out to the garage were the grow up box is.
My third batch was a total mix of angels and devils (2 EE, 1 polish, 1 welsummer, 1 JG male and 1 Delaware). The Welsummer and Polish were my little devils. Summer keeps attacking everyone and the polish was an escape artist.

I've already gotten rid of the Polish to someone more capable to handling her high spirit. I'm soon to trade off the 3 SLW and the Welsummer for building materials, but before that we were going to enjoy 3 large roasted chickens for Dinner next week, The Welsummer is still too young to eat.

My first order was 6 whites and 2 ducks i had to spereate the ducks because they were so sloppy. And they still are!!
I think its because its winter and they gotta stay in longer before going outside. I have 2 slw coming in april i hope they are angels.
