I've never had a chicken lay an egg-within-an-egg, but one of my runner ducks laid one a couple of years ago. I was so fascinated that I blew out the shells and saved them, one inside the other, like I found them. They are displayed in a jar on one of my bookcases.

Thunderstorms, a predator scare while laying, any stress that could interrupt or scare them while laying. Sometimes those things can cause them to pop it out early.

I have never seen an egg within an egg like this! Poor girl!
We recently had a RIR start laying, and her very first egg was HUGE with a double yolk. I felt so sorry for her, but she shook it off like “No big deal, I do this every day!”
Your little girl will get it worked out.

Wow, I've never had a hen whose first egg had a double yolk! Chickens are sure surprising!

Two of mine laid double yolks with the first few days of laying; none since, and none their first egg yet.
