Ivermectin Pour On or Dusting - Which Do You Prefer For External Parasites?

AT the risk of sounding like a complete bottom kisser, Dawg is absolutely right here. If they have mites already you should still dust the coop and everything. I didn't and got away with it, I THINK. I could be wrong.

Well if you're gonna bottom kiss....Dawg's is as good as any....LOL Sorry Dawg....couldn't resist. I too prefer seven and I only use it if I feel invisible creepy crawlies on my arms a few minutes after handling a bird.

Now that I feel like I've made a mistake by using the pour on, if I see more bugs, when is it safe to use sevin again? I will continue to dust the coop after cleaning.

I don't consider it a mistake....I still will sometimes use the pour on as a first or a second treatment but you still need to use the seven to dust all around. I seem to have mites about every four or five months....but then there are lots of wild birds that come in to the yard. Use the seven on them on day ten to catch any new hatches.

Thanks so much! I don't like deworming or using medication unless there is a definitive diagnosis. I guess I just never thought that a pour on would act as a wormer also. I guess you learn something new everyday :) I was just so tired of picking them up and then picking bugs off myself!!! Even after the dusting! Seems those critters like me just as much as the chickens....my kids never have a problem. Me, I manage to get them crawling all over...even in my hair

Maybe the pour on will get them under control and I will follow up with the sevin! Thanks again for all your help!

Thanks for the advice. I wish I would have read this before I used the ivermectin. I am just so very sick of the mites!!!! I have tried dusting with little to no results. I clean the coop and dust everything every two weeks. I dust walls, roosts, nest boxes, everything and still I have mites!

I will dust again and from now on use sevin dust...I didn't want to use anything that needs a withdrawal period, shoot!

regarding Northern Fowl Mites
keep in mind there are other mites as well and if you need webpages I can find them

So I recommend dusting every 7 days with the pesticide dust mentioned until gone. Go easy on the shavings as you must toss them each treatment (yes you really must or they LIVE). Now I don't even use shavings except nestboxes- I use sweet PDZ sprinkled everywhere and I seem to have fewer mite problems. I scrape the coop every day and sprinkle more down. This doesn't work well during freezing weather inside the coop, however. To be clear- the sweet PDZ doesn't kill bugs...just helps me with my chicken waste removal.

You too can be mite free! I would also spray the coop with some liquid permethrin diluted according to the label.

I really think these are lice, not mites...going now to research...they are hard to explain. They are softbodied but elongated and reddish brown. They are much bigger than any mite I have ever seen.

Looked them up...these are definitely lice, not mites. Any suggestions on how to get rid of them???? I've done the pour on....now what?

I have not seen, or felt, any mites. I have always been diligent to keep sevin in the coop and in the dust baths. Any other suggestions would be greatly appreciated...I need to get rid of these pests!!

Thanks to everyone for the replies! I always learn so much when I log into the forum! And I am a total follower of The Gospel According to Dawg!

Had to give you a shout out Dawg! I've learned so much by reading everyone's posts. My wife is always amazed that any question I've done a search on, there's always existing answers! Too fun.

Leadwolf1: My understanding (and this comes only from reading a lot on the forum) is that pour on won't kill lice as they are not feeding on blood, like mites do. I think dusting might be the only way to get rid of these critters. I've got a soil/sand/DE pit that they always use in their pen to dust bath in, but am going to Sevin dust since the scaly leg mites showed up. Haven't seen any other creepy crawlies yet! (Knock on the coop!

Ivermectin/eprinex will not kill lice, only mites. Dust them individually with sevin. Repeat in 10 days as ChickensAreSweet mentioned, inside the coop as well.
