Ivermectin

There are a couple of organic sources for Mites in the coop.....
Neem Oil if you can find it ....
Orange Oil....

There has Been alot of discussion pro and con for Diatomaceous Earth... or DE. I was pro for a very long time... Still am in certain applications. BUT here is what flipped me over... It is a hazard to the lungs...

Pyrethrins are used in Birds in General... They can be found in Flea Spray, Garden Spray, Bird spray.... Also for livestock.... They are an insecticide and a larvacide.

But... Ivermectin is Readily absorbed through the skin... and dosages are small. Relatively. Not only does it treat chewing insects... But it also treats many worms including intramuscular worms.

Remember Treatment of the coop should be done Twice... Once initially and again in about ten days when the eggs of the mites hatch. Strip out all bedding and throw it away or if you can burn it. Then treat the Coop and pay attention to all cracks and places where you see gaps between wood. Some mites hide in there during the day and come out to feed at night...

Leg mites are different. last time I dealt with them was before I had an internet resource... Ivermectin may not be a good choice for them.

Hi Deb,

I am curious, why not for leg mites?? :pop

because they get between the scales on the legs... Their food source is skin... they dig tiny tunnels and deposit waste in their wake... :sick The Vaseline suffocates them.

I have heard of people rubbing it on their legs, I don't know which type it was but I suspect Pour On. I thought orally it was supposed to work also though!! It amazes me what I find out on this forum!!

Ok Life cycle is spent on the host.... Is 14-21 days they go through two lymph stages... And they are live born.... No eggs. They spread to other birds by contact...

And they can be carried as dormant untill the bird gets immuno suppressed. So I would also treat all the birds as needing Vitimines and or Micro nutrients...

What I have learned on this forum is to keep digging outside... I am a researcher by nature.... if I hear something contrary I dig into the research papers that can be found on line. When its insect involved I dig into the Entomologists sites... people who don't have an investment in "selling" you a product.

@casportpony is some one who has the same tenacity... and My go to for questions and or her resources for information. But there are many Others at BYC... Either Ameture Scientists or professional Scientist.... Then there are also People who are Major breeders and Educators... I have only come across a handfull in my own research...

With over a million members here I would say a good ten percent or more are of that caliber...

This I knew:
Ok Life cycle is spent on the host.... Is 14-21 days they go through two lymph stages... And they are live born.... No eggs. They spread to other birds by contact...

This I did not:
And they can be carried as dormant untill the bird gets immuno suppressed.

I research all over the place also, but I find the questions posed and varied answers given here are a wealth of encouragement for learning more. A lot of new threads send me researching, I think it's great!
