Ivermectin

There is a vet on a chicken Facebook page that says withdrawal is 8 weeks.

Not disputing your post however I find it odd that for the minute amount injected and that ivermectin is used to treat some types of parasitic infections in humans that there is any withdrawal at all. IIRC the recommendation for withdrawal hinges on the fact that ivermectin is off label use in poultry. As off label use, there cant be a documented withdrawal period.

You're sort of preaching to the choir. Me, I don't care and I just sat the eggs. :hide

No, it's not formulated to cross the skin, so it would probably not do you much good. It might get in in some capacity, but no way to know how much of it will get to the chicken.

Topical drugs are made to absorb into the skin, and injectable drugs aren't.

Generally speaking in most all cases you are correct however topical ivermectin is formulated for very heavy skinned animals as compared to poultry. There is considerable risk to producing a chemical burn on poultry. Injectable does cross the skin barrier in the case of poultry.

What is confusing to me is why after going to the trouble to catch chickens to administer ivermectin why select a secondary route of administration that is less effective than t bt e primary. 3ml syringe, 1/2 insulin needle, flip the chicken upside and inject 1/2cc IM and be done with it.

I usually give it orally.
