Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

Catching up on this thread....Congrats to all the new babies!!!

Going into day four with my bator full, lost power yesterday but was able to get the generator up and running, Incubator was at 87 when I woke up and it took a couple hours to get it back up to temp, electric came back several hours later was on for a few hours then kicked off again...grrr... DH was gone so no way for me to get the generator started, just covered the bator again and waited, couple hours later it was back on, incubator temp read 93... Wasn't to worried, stayed up long enough to make sure temp was holding then off to dreamland...

Got up this morning and it was at 104.2....

I know enough to know that temp spikes are normal and as long as it isn't a constant thing were ok...Took the opportunity last night after the electric came back on to candle a few, can see signs of veining starting... Hoping this hatch goes better than the last

40 Of the eggs were purchased from a guy in my area, the lady that gave me his number just told me yesterday several of the eggs she got weren't fertile... Thank goodness I didn't spend a lot!! He gave me more than I paid for and more than my bator would hold (wanted to put some of my own in) so I checked the extra's for fertility, all but one of the eight were fertile.. My luck I culled all the fertile ones!

spikes happen- I am always watching for them- usually happens when bator has cooled and you r trying to heat up again. as long as it did't spike for long don't worry

I have several 5 month old pullets out with my egg layers. My EEs had slowed for the winter, never giving up altogether. Now my EE's are gearing back up and I have a few smaller eggs. One had a little blood on it. I am wondering if this is from a young Legabr or an EE that took the winter off. I haven't been able to catch a Legbar in the nesting boxes. But I see my EE's in there all of the time.

My 5 month olds are 5 Legbars, 5 Marans, 1 Lavender Orpington, 1 Cochin, 1 Isbar and my Langshans but no idea if any are female.

I also have the 2 gimpy girls inside. One is production red hen crossed with bantam Salmon Faverolle. She is 6 months. She is not very big and has always been inside. I am wondering if this will affect her laying. Such a sweet baby. I don't want it to hurt her when she lays.

As much as I love all of my babies, sometimes I miss the simple days of having only 8. My first babies coming in for the night thru the doggie door.

I have never seen him do that before lol too funny!! He hurt his leg yesterday :( going to get some TLC for a while. it is really warm in the house for him since its been snowing outside, I don't think he likes 75F!

Final Faverolle count, 3 of 7

one died last night part-way out of the shell, trying to figure out what happened/why

I was already counting this one as hatched....

one died in the shell after pipping internally, it was HUGE for the shell and never externally pipped. also this was the hardest shell I have EVER broken open. it was so incredibly thick/hard....

one died without internally pipping, not sure what happened there
one died around day 16, it is the one who always looked behind/malpositioned.

so 3 total... 2 girls 1 boy.
it would have been 4 girls 2 boys who made it to full term. I will admit I cried over dead chicks this time. I don't know why sometimes it hits you so hard when you find them dead. I know I did everything I could do, but somehow I still feel a twinge of guilt over the loss.

Five days til hatch, and I have seen one of the five remaining eggs wiggle. Upon further candling it looks like the aircells were pretty badly detached. No surprise considering they were on their sides and could shake around inside of the box when I got 'em. I have no idea if anything is growing still in the other four or not but I see some dark veining still so we'll see. When should I stop turning?

Jan; where did you get YOUR wheaten Amer's from?

I got mine from Lark Rise. I've been eyeing them for a year and I finally broke down and got them. Who did you get yours from?

Good Morning,
7 out this morning.......

Really odd hatch...After lockdown was running 70 humidity on one side of the incubator..40 on the other........
Temp kept creeping up to 103.................grrrrrrrrrrrrrr.
Discovered the humidity problem was because the cord was stuck slightly holding the back side of the bator up......
Corrected that.was about two days with this issue...........Thought.crap.not going to get a hatch.
Now they are popping out like popcorn.no muss, no fuss...................just pip.zip and out............
All the chicks so far are healthy and without foot problems...........
I guess if they want to hatch.they will...

I do know the parents are in good health....wonder really how much this has an affect.
and how much this plays into shipped eggs that don't hatch??????????
These are all eggs from my layers..........

I'm sorry your hatch is late. I'd give it a couple more days if it doesn't smell bad. Also, have you candled to see if there's any movement? Good luck!!

No - this time we didn;t do anything Just let it run. - We will be Float testing before tossing of course. But as for anything else NO. The hatch isn't very late. - I have had live hatches very late indeed day 27/28 before and those survived with help. So I am loath to give up until after day 27. I don;t open the Bator during Lockdown so no would never lift an egg to candle or anything else unless float testing - as a last resort. You can disoriantate a chick if you turn the eggs late on. The eggs are heavy - so I guess there is something in there. Whether it is a live chick or not remains to be seen. Nothing happening still here. Not a thing.

Oes

Good luck!!! I hope you get a good hatch. :)

Um hello guys, i just wanted to ask if a broody hen helps her chicks hatch or provides any help at all.
