Jan./Feb. 2014 hatch a long

Been lurking here for awhile reading up on everyone's success and issues, this site is a great one stop shop for all things chickens. so I built a coolerbator and decided to give incubating a shot. I put 18 eggs in on Feb. 2 and tomorrow will be lock down. I just candled them for only the second time and so far all looks good. I have only had 1 not take so I disposed of it. I used a egg rack to assist in the turning and have taken them all out of the rack and laid them on a screen covered with a towel. The only issue I have had is with my humidity it has been bouncing around from 50-25, it has been a real challenge to get it regulated.

It has been a really cool experience doing this but I can hardly wait for Sunday. Good luck to everyone with their hatchings.

And..good luck to you!

I love blue chicks! They are so cute <3 What kind are they? Congrats

Silkie/cochin bantams..may be pure or not..who knows says the sales person. :) I am loving all of the feathering on these little ones..Holy Cow, they have thick feathering. Going to be fun watching them walk around in the future. I have a girl out there right now..a pure bantam cochin, and she has so much feathering going on, I call her Charlie, because she walks like Charlie Chaplin. She's a sweetheart.

HELLO AND WELCOME TO BYC FROM FLORIDA!!!
GOOD LUCK ON YOUR HATCHING! WHAT KIND OF EGGS DID YOU SET?
P.S. POST PICS WHEN THEY HATCH!

When you candle, does the shell look odd? I did a quick candle tonight and both eggs I checked looked really porous, little spots all over of bright lighter areas. Is that normal?
Or is it a sign something is wrong?

it's hard to tell without seeing for ourselves....some colored eggs can look like that...some maybe porous....if the porous eggs were in the coop under a broody they maybe vulnerable to bacteria but in the incubator they have a better chance.

Today we candled (Day 14) and out of the 24 left in the bator we saw 20 that had movement! 1 that should probably go ahead and get pulled but I think we will candle the "non-movers" tomorrow and see if we see anything. Hoping that all 20 make it to lock down on Sunday
