Haha! my boys aren't really either.... They do like to watch her in the yard with her chicks though. We were hoping to see something but broody is locked down that's why we're tending to her. She was looking a little pale & panting so she gladly accepted food & water. Seems content with us here

Day four: to candle or not to candle. Maybe I'll wait till day ten. But then again, I want to see if my homemade incubator is doing the trick. Would love to see those veins forming on the inside. Still trying to simplify the whole hand turning thing. Propping the incubator With something under it won't work for me. Saw a video on YouTube where someone used a Carton of eggs attached to a three-quarter inch PVC pipe using a rubber band. Just trying to shorten the time the lid is open. Let's see.

Ok so for my next batch, I will be hatching more chicks from my flock. I want them to hatch on my birthday so I will be putting in another batch on January 28.

Now I'm debating whether to do this or coturnix quail eggs. I'm leaning towards the quail because I need to get my breeding birds for this year and no one seems to want to buy these chicks I hatched so I don't want to hatch more and find out no one wants them either.

I'm in a bit of a bind and need some advice. Long story short.. I put eggs in the bator last Friday and then more on sunday, (in hopes that the replacement cord to bator #2 would arrive sooner than later). Well.... the replacement cord wont be here before hatch day. GGGGRRRRRRR

Soooo, I have eggs in my bator with different hatch days. First set will be on a Friday and the rest on Sunday.. How in the world do I do lockdown???.

option #1 - start lockdown in the middle day, 1 day late/1 day early (since they are 2 days apart), call it 'close enough'

option #2 - candle the eggs and look for an internal pip day 18, 19, 20. Begin lockdown humidity only at first internal pip sighting regardless of day.

this is when it becomes important not to open the incubator, and keep humidity at 55-65%

A question: I have never had chicks this young (NYD hatch) Is it normal for their crops to be visibly stuffed? I think that is what it is. It just looks kind of weird.

The answer is yes..and it does look weird doesn't it................looks like they swallowed a ping pong ball..........

Thank you!! I feel that option 2 would be the smarter move. Do I need to lock it down when I see just one egg pip or wait until I see a few. I'm thinking just one but I just want to confirm.

Do broodies count? If they all hatch, our countdown ends some time this week. Woohoo, polish mixes and our first time if they hatch. Any tips much appreciated!
